What is Sewn Binding?

Sewn binding (also called section sewn, thread sewn, or Smyth sewn) is a traditional bookbinding method where printed sheets are folded into sections (signatures), then stitched together with thread.

This is the same method used to bind books for centuries – from antique leather volumes to modern coffee table books. The thread creates incredibly strong yet flexible joints between sections, allowing books to open flat and withstand thousands of openings.

Key benefit: Sewn binding is the strongest, most durable binding method available. Books bound this way can last for generations with proper care.

How Sewn Binding Works

  1. 1
Folding: Printed sheets are folded into sections called 'signatures' (typically 8, 16, or 32 pages each)
  2. 2
Gathering: Signatures are collated in the correct order
  3. 3
Sewing: Each signature is sewn through the fold with thread, linking it to the adjacent signatures
  4. 4
Gluing: The spine is reinforced with glue and often lined with fabric (mull)
  5. 5
Casing: The sewn book block is attached to either a hard case or soft cover

Why Choose Sewn Binding?

Unmatched Durability

Thread creates mechanical bonds between pages that simply can't fail the way glue can. Pages won't fall out, even after years of heavy use.

Excellent Lay-Flat

The flexible thread joints allow books to open wide and lay flat naturally, without straining the binding.

Handles Heavy Paper

Thick, heavy papers that would stress adhesive bindings work perfectly with sewn binding. Ideal for art books and photo books.

Repairable

Unlike glued bindings, sewn books can be professionally restored and rebound if damaged – important for archival and collector editions.

Sewn Binding Options

Sewn binding can be combined with either hardcover or softcover finishing:
