What is Case Binding?
Case binding is the traditional method for creating hardcover books. The book's pages (the 'book block') are bound separately, then attached to a hard cover (the 'case') made from thick board wrapped in cloth, paper, or other materials.
This is the binding method you'll find on most quality hardbacks, from fiction bestsellers to coffee table books to academic texts. It's designed to last decades with proper care.
Key benefit: Case binding creates books of exceptional durability and perceived value, making them ideal for important publications, gifts, and books meant to be kept.
Case Cover Options

Printed Paper Case
A printed, laminated sheet wrapped around the hard case. Full-colour designs, cost-effective, and versatile. Can be used alone or under a dust jacket.

Cloth Cover
Traditional cloth or imitation cloth wrapping. Often enhanced with foil blocking on spine and front. Premium feel and timeless appearance.

Dust Jacket
A removable printed wrapper with folded flaps. Protects the cover and provides extra space for marketing copy and author information.
How Pages are Bound
Case bound books can use different methods to bind the pages together before they're attached to the case:
Sewn Case Binding
Pages are gathered into sections (signatures) and sewn together with thread before being glued to the case. This traditional method offers superior durability and better lay-flat properties, allowing the book to open more freely without straining the spine.
Adhesive Case Binding
Pages are glued together (using EVA or PUR adhesive) before being attached to the case. More cost-effective while still providing excellent durability.
Dust Jackets with Flaps
Dust jackets feature folded flaps that tuck inside the front and back covers. These flaps serve multiple purposes:
- Hold the jacket securely in place on the book
- Provide space for author biography and photo
- Include reviews, blurbs, and marketing text
- Add a premium, bookshop-quality appearance
Dust jackets can be finished with matt or gloss lamination, spot UV varnish, foil blocking, or embossing for extra impact.
Endpapers
All case bound books include endpapers – the decorative sheets that connect the book block to the covers. Endpapers can be:
- Plain – White, cream, or coloured unprinted paper
- Printed – Custom designs, maps, patterns, or images
- Self-ended – Using the same paper as the interior pages
Printed endpapers add a premium touch and can reinforce your book's theme or branding.

Premium Finishing Options
Case bound books can be enhanced with a range of finishing touches:
Gold, silver, or coloured foil stamped onto the cover or spine
Raised or recessed designs pressed into the cover
Decorative fabric bands at the top and bottom of the spine
Built-in bookmarks for journals, bibles, and reference books
Gold, silver, or coloured ink applied to page edges
Selective high-gloss areas on the cover or dust jacket
